Alessandra Singh

Artist member since 2022
Toronto, Ontario

Alessandra Singh is a recently graduated Thesis student and Drawing and Painting major at OCAD University. Growing up in a very science driven family, Alessandra did not begin truly focusing on the arts until high school, when she fell in love with it. She works in acrylic, multimedia pieces, and digital work. Throughout the last couple years her style has evolved into woven portraiture which is currently her main focus. Her process is experimental, messy, and dynamic. Alessandra exhibits her works at a variety of shows and galleries around Toronto. Her video work, Bubblewrapped, was screened at the TIFF Lightbox Theatre as part of OCADSU's Spring Festival. Additionally, her painting, Jane, was recently exhibited at Gallery1313 as part of DesignTO's festival. Alessandra enjoys primarily exploring concepts of feminism and human experience.

Q+A

Only thing you need when you leave the house

My camera and headphones! I love to capture little moments in my day while listening to some tunes :)

Why is it important for people to have art in their home or life?

I think art is important to have in your life to add colour, emotion, movement, and perspective. Art can be appreciated and understood from endless different perspectives making it truly universal and fun for everyone.

Best season of the year in Toronto

Summer. This is my first summer downtown so I'm excited to enjoy the weather and explore new places!

When did you start making art, and why?

I started making art in high school when I took a mandatory art class and realized I loved creating. The rest is history!

Which piece of art you've created is your favourite, and why?

My latest collection, specifically, I Called my Mom to Talk About the Weather, is my favourite work I have created as it is personal and brutally honest. The creation of this work allowed me the opportunity to confront emotions in a way I have not felt comfortable doing prior. The journey of working honestly allowed me to grow emotionally and ultimately create work that I am very proud of and that I think represents me more than anything I have created previously.
